$257,000 in Overtime Pay

A dispatcher for the Riverside Public Utilities department became the city’s highest-paid employee in 2016 after taking home more than $257,000 in overtime pay along with his base salary.

According to Transparent California, a government watchdog group, dispatcher Donald Dahle received $257,719 in overtime in 2016, boosting his total earnings to $373,235.

Girish Balachandran, general manager of Riverside Public Utilities, said the agency has only 10 dispatchers, when ideally it should have 12 to 13, and the position requires around-the-clock work.

Mr. Dahle is willing to work overtime when others aren’t, Mr. Balachandran said, adding: “He has gone above and beyond to actually show up and staff the dispatch center.” (Source: Riverside Press-Enterprise, May 24.)
