$3 Million in HVAC Equipment Went Unused at Sacramento-Area Schools

The extent of wasted education dollars will never be known, but one example has been brought to light in the Sacramento area. Several school districts purchased 140 brand-new heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) units worth $3 million, then left the equipment sitting idle for years. According to The Sacramento Bee, 53 of the units that were purchased before 2009 are at the East Natomas Education Complex, a campus that never opened. One 60-ton HVAC unit lies dormant in an open field, scarred by vandals. In the parking lot behind the district’s maintenance facility, 17 units intended for Ridgepoint Elementary School have sat uncovered for about seven years. (Source: The Sacramento Bee, January 27.)
