A couple in La Mesa (San Diego County) said they received an envelope from the state’s Obamacare administration agency, Covered California, that included a voter registration card pre-marked with an “x” in the box next to Democratic Party.
Covered California began mailing out voter registration cards to nearly 4 million enrollees in late March after being threatened with a suit by the American Civil Liberties Union, representing the League of Women Voters and other groups. The groups said the 1993 National Voter Registration Act, which requires states to provide voter registration materials at DMV and welfare offices, also requires such materials in Cover California’s mailings.
The La Mesa couple, interviewed by a San Diego television station but not identified, already are registered to vote, as members of the Republican Party. “It’s a waste of money because there’s an awful lot of people who are going to get this that are already registered,” one of the recipients of the mailer said.
A Covered California spokeswoman said its application forms come directly from the Secretary of State’s Office, and should not have any fields pre-marked. She said the secretary of state should be able to investigate the La Mesa couple’s complaint, using the unique serial number on the registration form. (Source: ABC10News, March 31.)
