The California State University system has been increasing its staffing and salary costs even as leaders of the system say budget problems are forcing them to cut back on class offerings and make other changes to save money.
Employee costs rose 5.5 percent in one year, the Orange County Register reported. In 2010, CSU had 57,163 employees who were paid a total of $2.4 billion. In 2011, the number of employees increased to 57,969, and the total salary cost increased to $2.6 billion.
CSU officials said the increases are attributable to the end of large-scale furloughs implemented in 2010. (Source: Orange County Register, June 26.)
