Deputy Charged With Looting From Store He Was Supposed to Protect

A San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy was fired August 24 and charged with assaulting an alleged looter and stealing from the sporting goods store he was dispatched to protect.

Prosecutors charged Erdem Gorgulu, of Redlands, with suspicion of assault under color of authority and assault with a deadly weapon, both felonies. He is also accused of misdemeanor counts of filing a false police report and looting.

The deputy had been dispatched to investigate reports of looting in the early hours of June 1. His partner reported that Gorgulu’s actions were “unwarranted and unethical,” prompting a criminal and internal investigation.

Authorities discovered stolen items in the deputy’s vehicle. He was placed on administrative leave June 3. He had been a deputy for more than 11 years. (Source: San Bernardino Sun, August 26.)
