Govenment-Employed Mechanic Made $163,856 in Overtime Alone

Is San Francisco's local government being run effectively? San Francisco Chronicle columnists Phillip Matier and Andrew Ross provide the answer: "San Francisco municipal overtime spiked $18 million over budget in the first year of Mayor Ed Lee's administration – with one (Municipal Transportation Agency) mechanic raking in an extra $163,856."

The mechanic more than doubled his base salary of $106,036 by reporting 1,954 hours of overtime. As the columnists note, this is "roughly equal to working an extra 40 hours a week, every week, at $83.85 an hour."

With an additional $23,000 in premium pay and shift differentials, the mechanic had a total salary of $293,370 in 2011-12.

Another transit worker logged 2,262 hours of overtime, totaling $147,446. All totaled, 10 transit supervisors made more than $100,000 in overtime alone, and each made more than $200,000 for the year. (Source: San Francisco Chronicle, January 14.)
