Santa Clara County Hires Bodyguard for Leader of Board of Supervisors

Santa Clara County has created a new perk for an elected official – a full-time bodyguard/chauffer for the president of the Board of Supervisors. The bodyguard, who was hired in February, is believed to be making at least $100,000 a year for driving the supervisor to meetings and providing security.

Supervisor George Shirakawa, the current president of the board, said he has never received any threats, and the Legislative Analyst's Office has noted that the county has a relatively low crime rate.

Still, the bodyguard was hired as a one-year pilot project to determine whether the position is needed, and how much it will cost. (CalTax: These are questions that should be answered before a new public employee is hired, not after.) (Source: San Jose Mercury News, June 19.)
