The Fresno Unified School District has 10 communications staffers on its payroll, but still decided recently to hire two East Coast public relations consultants at a rate of $100 per hour each.
The consultants – both former full-time employees of the school district who now oversee the communications department at Medgar Evers College in New York – are “known for reshaping reputations,” according to The Fresno Bee. They were hired a week before the district’s superintendent held a press conference to address a scandal involving a no-bid construction deal.
The district approved contracts that will pay each consultant up to $14,900 – just $100 below the $15,000 threshold that would require school board approval. (Source: The Fresno Bee, July 11.)
