Two School Board Members Charged With Bribery

Former Los Banos Mayor Tommy Jones was arrested August 31 and charged with bribing public officials in his current capacity as a member of the Los Banos Unified School District board.

Mr. Jones, who was released on bail, was accused of conspiring with construction manager – and Merced Union High School District board member – Greg Opinski to bribe at least one trustee of the Los Banos Unified School District to award a $541,000 contract to Mr. Opinski’s company.

The official they attempted to bribe was cooperating with investigators, and recorded several conversations that prosecutors say implicate Mr. Jones and Mr. Opinski, who also was arrested on suspicion of bribing a public official.
